La Galerie des Glaces

Three hundred and fifty-seven mirrors, and one pink stone.

La Galerie des Glaces

Plate I Plate I — the window, the gardens, the box on the marble.

From the Maison

Some rooms were built to be seen in, and this one was built to be seen twice. Seventeen windows on the garden, seventeen arches of mirror facing them, and every candle answered by its own reflection. At night the gallery stops being architecture. It becomes a great slow lantern, and anyone who walks its length walks in double.

La Galerie des Glaces is the edit we made for that hour. Black velvet, threaded in gold. A window left open on the dark gardens. On the marble ledge, an orange box and the purple coffret of the Legends, holding a pink stone cut to the proportions of the most famous pink diamond of our time. A legend, worn.

Chapter One

A room built to be seen twice.

The dancers go past the mirrors and the mirrors send them back. Nobody in this room is ever quite alone, which is the whole point of the room.

She has found the one window where the gallery is quieter. The gardens are dark below. The candles behind her have doubled into a thousand.

“

Every candle in the room answered by its own reflection.

Chapter Two

She walks the length of the light.

The parquet is old and warm under the candles. Her reflection keeps pace with her, a step behind, in glass that has watched three centuries of evenings like this one.

Halfway down, a small gilt table. On it, the only things in the gallery that are not gold: an orange box, opened, and a stone the colour of the last of the evening.

— On Legends

A meditation on the stone that became a story

In November 2018, in a saleroom in Geneva, a pink diamond of nearly nineteen carats sold in a few minutes for fifty million dollars. Emerald cut, fancy vivid, a colour so pure the room went quiet before the bidding began. It had been in one family for most of a century. Then it was gone, into another vault, and the world went back to looking at photographs.

The Maison does not collect diamonds. It collects their looks. The Satéur Dynastie Rose sets a nineteen-carat pink Satéur Gem® in the same step-cut calm, between the same white shields, in 18K white gold finish. Across a table, across a ballroom, across a gallery of mirrors, nobody knows. The difference is the price. The look of a flawless pink diamond, for less than one percent of it.

What that buys is not a smaller legend. It is a legend that leaves the vault. A ring that can be worn to the ball and to breakfast the morning after. A stone that is allowed out of the saleroom and into a life.

Each Legend arrives in its own coffret, purple and gold, with a crown on the lid and a certificate inside. Maison Satéur keeps them for the woman who would rather wear the story than read about it.

Chapter Four

A coffret, in purple and gold.

The Legends do not arrive in an ordinary box. They arrive in a coffret with a crown on the lid, gilt columns at the corners, and the Maison's orange box waiting inside.

On a marble window ledge in a hall of mirrors it looks, for one evening, like it has always belonged there. Purple against the white stone. Gold against the gold. The lettering catches the same candle the mirrors do.

After the ball, the stone stays.

Scene V A presence, shared at the table.

Chapter Five

After the ball, the stone stays.

The musicians pack away. The candles burn down to the wax. Somebody closes the windows on the gardens, one by one, down the whole length of the gallery.

She leaves the box open on the ledge a moment longer, then the ring goes on. It will be worn tomorrow, and through the winter, in rooms with no mirrors at all. This was always the agreement.
