Le Quotidien

A villa, a garden, and a real diamond with nowhere special to be.

Le Quotidien

Plate I Plate I — the archway, before the day begins.

From the Maison

There is a drawer in most houses where the good jewelry lives. It is opened four times a year. It has a small velvet tray, a lock that no one uses, and a diamond inside that has met fewer mornings than the woman who owns it. We have been thinking about that drawer for some time. We have decided we do not like it.

*Le Quotidien* is the edit we made for the diamond that never goes back in. Real diamonds — grown, not mined — set in solid gold, priced to be worn on a Tuesday. Each one leaves the Maison with its own papers. Diamonds grow forever. So does the habit of wearing one.

I.
Chapter One

The hour before anyone asks.

The library faces the garden, so the light arrives green before it arrives gold. She is reading something she has read before. The box is on the table because it has not yet been put away, and it will not be.

Nothing about the morning is an occasion. That is the entire point of it.

The good jewelry drawer is a storage problem disguised as a tradition.

From the Editor's Letter
She bought it for herself.

Scene II A still moment, between courses.

II.
Chapter Two

She bought it for herself.

There was no anniversary. No one knelt. No one was consulted.

She read the specification the way other people read a wine label — carat, cut, colour, the laboratory it was grown in — and then she closed the browser and went to bed, and bought it in the morning anyway. This is how most of our diamonds leave the Maison now. We have stopped being surprised by it.

— Chapter III

grow forever. Diamonds

Grown in a laboratory. Set in solid gold. Worn in a garden.

— On the Everyday

A meditation on the diamond that is never put away.

A diamond is carbon that agreed to be orderly. Whether that agreement was reached under a continent over a billion years, or in a chamber in a matter of weeks, the result is the same stone — the same hardness, the same fire, the same refusal to dull. One route simply takes longer and costs more, and the difference is not visible in a garden at nine in the morning.

What changes when the price changes is not the diamond. It is the behaviour around it. A diamond bought for an occasion is worn for occasions. A diamond bought for a Tuesday is worn on Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, and through the washing-up, and to the airport, and to bed.

So we built the collection backwards. Not the largest stone one can justify once, but the stone one stops noticing one is wearing. Studs at dawn. A marquise leaf on a band. Seven stones graduating along a chain like a path through a garden. Solid gold throughout, because plate has an expiry date and the everyday is a long time.

Every piece leaves with the Diamond Dossier — the Maison's own record of what the stone is, what it weighs, and the serial it was entered under. Not because a diamond needs defending. Because a thing worn every day deserves to be written down.

Chapter Four

Every piece leaves with its papers.

The green box is the collection's own — vine and gold, the garden painted on the lid.

Inside it: the piece, the Diamond Dossier, and a serial number entered into the Maison Registry. Specification, plainly stated. Origin, plainly stated: laboratory-grown diamond. There is nothing here we would rather you did not read.

And then it simply stays on.

Scene V A presence, shared at the table.

V.
Chapter Five

And then it simply stays on.

Which was always the ambition.

The garden closes. The linen is folded. The diamond does not come off for any of it — not that evening, not that week, not for the rest of a year that has no particular plans for it. A real diamond, in solid gold, on an ordinary Thursday. We would like this to stop being remarkable.
